Moonlit Sea ConcertA Good Practice for Sustainability

The East Coast National Scenic Area stretches across parts of Hualien and Taitung, embracing 188 km of spectacular coastline where indigenous culture and natural beauty thrive side by side. In Chenggong Township, despite breathtaking scenery, the decline of agriculture and fisheries coupled with an aging population has posed challenges. Yet, the Moonlit Sea Concert has transformed this tranquil corner into a vibrant stage for culture, art, and sustainable development.

Nature as the Stage, Sustainability as the Melody

Guided by the principles of respecting nature, integrating art into daily life, and advancing sustainable development, this event model is designed for long-term community success. The concert is scheduled to coincide with the full moon, blending minimal stage design with the natural coastal backdrop to reduce environmental impact. Transportation measures include promoting carpooling and providing shuttle buses to lower carbon emissions. The program features original Taiwanese musicians, indigenous song and dance, and a creative market of local vendors using eco-friendly materials and sustainable packaging. Facilities such as washing stations and waste-sorting systems encourage responsible visitor behavior. This event fosters community pride and participation, allowing local residents to find renewed purpose while giving visitors an immersive experience of the East Coast’s deep cultural roots and natural beauty.

Fugang GeoparkGeology, Environment & Community Regenerative Tourism

Located in eastern Taiwan, Fugang Community and the Xiaoyeliu Recreation Area face multiple challenges — an aging population, youth outmigration, and the environmental pressures of overtourism. Many visitors see Fugang merely as a transit stop on the way to Green Island or Orchid Island, offering little benefit to the local economy. At the same time, hermit crabs have been found using plastic bottle caps as shells, while litter and noise continue to stress the natural environment. In response, the community launched a creative transformation centered on sustainable tourism — featuring Night Tours in Xiaoyeliu and environmental education programs as key attractions.

Uniting the Community: From Branding to Economic Growth

The "Fugang:Stay and play, rock the port!" regional brand connects local businesses with the geopark’s natural assets to create an integrated tourism network. This branding initiative not only deepens visitor understanding of local culture but also drives economic growth. Its success has inspired young people to return, contributing to the development of unique cultural experiences such as guided fish market tours and introductions to the Sea God Temple traditions — strengthening community bonds.

Vision for the Future: A Model of Sustainability & Balance
Fugang's efforts demonstrate how nature conservation and economic development can go hand in hand. Through innovation and collaboration, this small coastal community has not only addressed its own challenges but also set a benchmark for sustainable tourism. Looking ahead, Fugang remains committed to sustainability — inviting more people to experience the ecological and cultural richness of this remarkable corner of Taiwan.
